I spent twelve years behind the camera learning what photographers actually need. Then I built the company that gives it to them.
Founder of Vacanva, where nonprofits raise real money, families get art worth keeping, and photographers get paid to do the only part they love. Author, educator, and lifelong believer that the best businesses are the ones where nobody has to lose.
Explore Vacanva
The nonprofit keeps everything
A supporter donates two hundred dollars to a cause they already care about, and the organization keeps every dollar of it. No gala to throw. No volunteers to burn out.
The family gets an heirloom
Ninety minutes with a professional photographer and a 16x20 mounted print for the wall. Not a tote bag. Not a raffle ticket. Something they will still have in forty years.
The photographer just shoots
No consultations, no scouting, no permits, no editing, no chasing an invoice for six weeks. We carry all of it, so the only thing asked of them is the part they love.
WHAT I'M BUILDING
Vacanva
We do all the work. You keep all the donations.
Vacanva turns portrait sessions into a fundraising engine for nonprofits. An organization shares one link. Their supporters donate. The organization keeps one hundred percent of every donation, and each donor receives a professionally produced portrait experience with a mounted print to hang.
Behind that simple exchange, we run the entire operation. Consultation, wardrobe guidance, location selection, permits, the session itself, retouching, gallery delivery, framing, and installation. Nonprofits get a fundraiser that does not consume their volunteers. Families get an heirloom instead of a tote bag. Photographers get assignments where the only thing asked of them is to shoot.
Founded in 2020. Serving Bryan and College Station, and traveling nationwide for destination sessions.

BACKGROUND
The Road Here
Vacanva is not a first attempt. It is what twelve years of running a camera for a living taught me, built into a structure.

Twelve years as a single-photographer studio, mostly babies and families. Births, newborns, first years, seniors, weddings, and every ordinary Tuesday in between. I became a certified professional photographer, took on-call birth work at all hours, and built a Baby's First Year program that followed families through the whole first twelve months. This is where I learned what families actually treasure, and what a solo photographer can and cannot sustain.

My commercial work. Different clients, different pressure, a different kind of problem-solving. It taught me how to think about photography as a system and a deliverable rather than a single beautiful frame.
2017 聽路聽 The idea
On a family beach vacation, I tried to book a good photographer in a state I did not live in. It was harder than it should have been. I realized the problem was not a shortage of talent. It was the absence of anything connecting the people who wanted portraits with the people who could make them.

The first version was built for tourists. Then the world stopped traveling. The pivot to nonprofit fundraising turned out to be the better business, because it was the one where everybody won.
PHILOSOPHY
Everybody Wins
"I have never been interested in a deal where somebody has to lose. Line up the incentives so they point the same direction, and generosity stops being a sacrifice. It becomes the business model."
I have never been interested in a deal where somebody has to lose.
Most of the photography industry runs on someone quietly absorbing the cost. Photographers undercharge and call it passion. Nonprofits pour hundreds of volunteer hours into galas that net a fraction of what they cost to throw. Families keep putting off portraits until the kids are grown and the moment is gone. Everyone involved is a little worse off, and everyone has decided that is just how it works.
I spent twelve years inside that math. I ran a single-photographer studio. I was on call for births at two in the morning. I know exactly what it costs to build a career out of a craft, and I know how many talented people quit not because they were not good enough, but because the business around the art was designed to exhaust them.
So when I built Vacanva, I started from a different question. Not "how do I win this," but "what would this look like if every person at the table walked away better off?"
Here is the answer we landed on. A supporter donates two hundred dollars to a cause they already care about. The nonprofit keeps all of it. Every dollar. In return, that donor gets a ninety-minute portrait session and a 16x20 mounted print for their wall, which is considerably more than anyone gets for a two-hundred-dollar raffle ticket. The photographer shows up, shoots, and goes home. No consultations, no scouting, no permits, no culling, no editing, no gallery delivery, no chasing an invoice for six weeks. We carry all of it. The photographer gets paid to do the one thing they fell in love with in the first place.
Nobody in that chain is subsidizing anybody else. The nonprofit funds its mission. The family gets artwork they will still have in forty years. The photographer gets a career that does not burn out by year five. And I get to build something that grows because it works for the people inside it, not in spite of them.
That is the whole thing. It is not charity, and it is not a discount. It is structure. Line up the incentives so they point the same direction, and generosity stops being a sacrifice. It becomes the business model.
Everybody wins, or I am not interested.

ORIGINAL WORK
The Fine Art Shop
Beyond the sessions and the systems, I still make pictures for their own sake. These are the ones I print, sign, and send out into the world to hang on somebody's wall.
Browse the collection, or reach out if you are looking for something at a particular size for a particular room. I do that too.

Plus the shot list, email templates, workflow checklist, contracts guide, and marketing budget I built over a decade.

Birth Photography: The Art and Business of Labor and Delivery Photography
